MAZDA RX-7
1978.3 :The RX-7(SA22C) debuted in March 1978. RX-7 pure sports car was developed with the being "Fun to drive"in mind. The compact rotary engine was mounted at the back of the front axle, and ideal front and rear weight distribution (50.7:49.3) was realized.
1979.10 : The engine was improved to the rare combustion type, and mpg improved.
1980.11 : RX-7 got 4-wheel disc brakes (front ventilated). Externally, it changed the bumper made of iron into urethane, and was styled to give a smoother air flow and thereby reduce the drag co-efficient.
1983.9 : RX-7 has even more power with the 12A turbocharged rotary engine producing 165ps.
1985.9 : RX-7(FC3S) got a major upgrade for 1985 with a new body design, new 13B turbo rotary EGI with intercooler engine and new independent multilink rear suspension.
1987.8 : MAZDA introduced RX-7convertible in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the debut of the rotary engine.
It has electric convertible roof and Windblocker.
1989.4 : 13B engine got a independent twin scrolling turbo with more power(205PS) and torque(27.5kg-m).
1991.12 : A brand-new RX-7(FD-3S) was announced in late 1991. The engine was upgraded to the 13B Rotary EGI sequential twin-turbo with enlarged intercooler.
The low hood which cannot be regarded as front-engine is the big point of the FD-3S, the engine was mounted 50mm lower in order to lower the center of gravity.
1992.10 : The limited edition RX-7 type RZ 1st version, which is based on the type R, was introduced. It has decreased weight by the change in equipment by 30kg.
1993.8 : The RX-7 was changed a little. It was improved the suspension.
1993.10 : Mazda introduced a limited edition RX-7 type RZ 2nd version in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of its debut. The type RZ 2nd version was equipped with BILSTEIN dampers, Bridgestone S-07 tires, BBS alloy wheels, and RECARO seats.
1995.3 : The RX-7 was changed a little. The RX-7 was equipped with large size disc brakes for 17inches alloy wheels.
1996.1 : The RX-7 was partially restyled. Enhanced cooling performance due to increased air-intake pipe allows the RX-7 to achieve 265PS. Moreover, all grades feature new style taillights along with a redesigned new gauge cluster and large sized rear spoiler.
1997.1 : The limited edition RX-7 type RB Bathurst X was introduced. It is based on the Type RB, and it is equipped with red leather seats.
1997.10 : Mazda introduced a limited edition RX-7 Type RS-R in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Rotary engine. The RX-7 type RS-R, which is based on the type RZ model, features an exclusive BILSTEIN dampers and high performance tires.
1998. 12 : The RX-7 have gotten the 280PS. Enhanced turbocharger efficiency and cooling performance due to increased air-intake allows the RX-7 to achieve a maximum engine power of 280PS (Type RS and Type R) increased engine power combined with the light weight of the type R model realizes a power-to-weight ratio of 4.5kg/PS. The type RS adopted single-cylinder dampers jointly developed with BILSTEIN of Germany.
2000.10 : The limited edition RX-7 Type RZ is equipped with red custom full bucket seats manufactured by RECARO, a customs suspension system manufactured by BILSTEIN, and custom alloy wheels manufactured by BBS. These and other enhancements reduce the overall weight of the Type RZ by approximately 10kg, improving handling and performance.
2001.01 : The new special edition Type R Bathurst was based on the Type R, the RX-7 with the lightest power-weight ratio. It is equipped with custom height adjustable dampers and fog lamps. The name BATHURST was chosen to commemorate the Bathurst 12-hour car race in Australia, where the RX-7 was victorious for three consecutive years (1992-1994).
2002.3 : As the final limited-production series of the RX-7, the Spirit R series was introduced in Japan. The Spirit R Type-A is a two-seater model fitted with the Recaro-made exclusive red full bucket seats. All three models are equipped with common interior and exterior features, such as BBS 17 inch wheels, red brake calipers, and interior panels with a special soft coating, while each model shows off its own equipment to make a difference from the other.
